Lux Recommends: Industrial lighting

A few years ago, industrial lighting meant highbays and then, more recently, factory buildings began to have lower ceilings and so the lowbay was introduced. Factories are also cleaner than they used to be, but some can still use hazardous chemicals.

For these reasons, we have widened the scope of this article to include a wide range of luminaires that might be used in industrial premises so this review isn’t solely about big powerful highbays.

Nowadays almost every supplier has some kind of industrial luminaire in their range but many are poorly designed because they haven’t thought about what industrial environments are actually like.

For example:   

  • Dust and condensation can fall from the roof, so why would you make a luminaire with big slots on the upper surface? If you want some light emitted upwards use a clear IP rated cover.
  • Cleaning is often difficult and liable to be infrequent so why build a luminaire which is only IP20? This may be acceptable in a clean, factory but not where there is heavy manufacturing or oily/dusty atmospheres.
  • The ceiling of an industrial area is often a lot warmer than at bench level so why are some luminaires only suited to office type temperatures?

An interesting aspect to the market is that many suppliers told me that their customers specifically asked for luminaires with high colour temperatures such as 5000K or 6000K. Admittedly, you get a slightly higher lumen output per watt (than at 4000K) at these higher CCTs, but it is nothing significant.

 

Ansell Z Led

This is a compact, 320 mm dia x 180 mm, LED highbay. It is IP65, with an impact resistance of IK08. Colour rendering is CRI80+ and the black powder coated aluminium fins means it will operate in a 50C ambient.

It is rated at 98W and emits 11,800 lm. However, you do not get the option of different beam widths or accessories such as dimming or sensors.

 

Chalmit Protecta X

Regular readers of my product reviews will know that I have a preference for luminaires which are built to last longer than the LEDs inside. There is no point in having a light source that will last 25 years (100,000 hours at 4,000 hrs/year) if the driver and luminaire body will only last half that long.

The Protecta X is reassuringly solid and built with marine grade die-cast aluminium with an epoxy powder coat finish. The driver has upgraded electronics and is kept separate from the heat of the LEDs. There are no holes on the upper surface where moisture or dirt could enter. Everything looks as if it was designed to last and Chalmit claim a maintenance free (apart from cleaning) lifetime of 90,000 hours at 60C. Cooler ambient temperatures should make it last longer.

The emergency lighting version has a really useful feature in that the battery pack can be inserted at the time of installation. This avoids having the battery unpowered for long periods before the electrical work is complete, thus prolonging battery life.

The Protecta X is also available in ATEX versions.

 

 

Columbia Lighting Peloton

Columbia is a Hubbell Lighting brand and the Peloton is a newly launched luminaire aimed at light industry and warehouse applications. It follows the recent trend of having a central gear compartment with “wings”, containing the LEDs, on each side.

The Peloton is aimed at the budget market sector. The body is folded sheet steel and assembled with dozens of self-tapping screws.  In its favour, it does have a tough, white polyester powder coat finish with a high reflectance of 90 per cent. The fixed position wings have opal prismed covers. These are clipped in place, and offer wide, narrow or Lambertian beam distributions.

Two features that make the Peloton different from other highbays is the wide range of lumen output from 8,000 – 60,000 lm and colour temperatures from 3000 – 5000K. There is also a high ambient temperature version suitable for up to 65C.

 

 

Eaton LED Lowbay

This is a conventional white steel, box type, LED lowbay designed to replace 250 and 400W metal halide luminaires. It can deliver a nominal 15, 22 and 35,000 lumens so there is plenty of light for most industrial and warehouse applications. The LEDs are 4000K with a colour rendering CRI >80.

The reflector is white painted steel and there are just two beam options: Broad without any lenses, and Narrow which is the same but has cell-type anodised aluminium louvres fitted.

An advantage of this lowbay is that it will operate in ambient temperatures up to 50C. It also has DALI dimming and a variety of sensor options such as PIR, occupancy and daylight.

What is less good is that the LED chips are unprotected and exposed to dust and dirt.

 

 

 

Gamma  Lighting Raptor

The Raptor is designed for light industrial and warehouse use and could also be used in some commercial applications.  In essence, it is 1.7m long and measures just 60 x 70 mm in section.

The front face comprises six, lensed LED modules and these are available in a wide or medium beam plus another oval one for warehouse aisles.

Light outputs of 8,000 or 12,000 lumens per length are available in 4000K, CRI 80 and the Raptor will operate in ambient temperatures up to 35C.

There is a range of sensors and controls available meaning that the Raptor is a simple, no-nonsense, budget range luminaire suitable for a lot of undemanding industrial applications.

 

 

Holophane Haloprism

The Haloprism is a previous Lux Award winner and it is still one of the benchmark products by which others are judged.

One of its main features is the torus-shaped prismatic glass “diffuser”. This circular IP65 lens is available with five different beam widths and light output ranging from 15,000 to a whopping 60,000 lumens.

The control gear is mounted centrally and is, in effect, open at the top and bottom. This allows for an unimpeded flow of air through the luminaire. Together with the finned, cast aluminium body it means that the Haloprism can operate up to an ambient temperature of 50C.

 

 

Sammode Cugnot

If you are looking for something tough, look no further. It has been designed to resist chemically corrosive atmospheres and severe vibrations. The driver and electronics have been upgraded to resist uneven power supplies or those subject to surges and over-voltages.

The body and opal diffuser are made of polycarbonate co-extruded with pmma to IK10. Fixings and end-caps are 316L stainless steel. Typically used in the food industry, the Cugnot can be chemically cleaned and then jet washed afterwards.

Various lengths are available with typical lumen outputs from 1,850 – 9,250 lumens.

Interestingly, the Cugnot is often specified by interior designers and architects who want an “industrial chic” type of look.

 

 

Thorn Aquaforce Pro

This is a deceptively simple looking luminaire. But when you look at it closely, it reveals a great deal of thought in its design.

Firstly, the body has no sharp corners and there are no horizontal ledges that can collect dirt. The diffuser is slightly concave and what this means is that condensation and drips only collect along its edges rather than the whole of the light emitting surface. Similarly, the smooth diffuser snaps into place rather than having multiple clips or fixing screws. Quicker to fix and no screws to lose.

It has DALI dimming with an inbuilt corridor function and presence detector. It also has an integral RF radio module so you can connect fixtures together wirelessly.

It is also incredibly easy to install using the mounting sliders and there are 10 cable entry points. You can mount it on a wall either horizontally or vertically. Both body and diffuser are made of polycarbonate.

A good all-rounder.

 

 

Trilux E Line Next

This is brand new and is also the latest generation of the E Line launched in 1992. In essence, it is a continuous line “trunking” system to which a huge variety of luminaires can be attached.

You can have fixed luminaire positions or variable ones. Unlike many continuous systems, the E Line Next is available as IP54. There are lens optics, prismatic optics, opal and spotlights. I counted 15 different kinds, all available in CRI 80 or 90 with light output from 2,000 to 20,000 lumens.

Large panels, spotlights, downlights and linear lights can all be connected to the system. Obviously, there is a wide range of sensors, DALI control, RF and connectivity.

Thankfully, there is a useful leaflet giving an overview of the system and there is a downloadable app to do the actual product configuration. Even the delivery to site can be optimised to minimise packaging waste.
