Stalled lighting projects ‘to get go-ahead after Brexit’

THE PENT-UP demand for new and refurbishment lighting projects will make itself felt once the outcome of the Brexit process is final and clear, the chief of one of Britain’s leading brands has forecast.

Tamlite Lighting, whose sister company is the leading UK wholesaler City Electrical Factors, was named ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ at the 2018 Lux Awards for demonstrating ‘exceptional performance and innovation’ during the period.

John Allden, managing director of Tamlite Lighting, says the general economic outlook for 2019 is currently ‘clouded by Brexit’ with many in this industry seeing the effect with a slowdown in project take up.

‘However. once the final outcome is there and known to everybody I’m sure there is a pent-up demand that companies like Tamlite will be in very strong position to take advantage of’, predicted Allden.

He believes the notwithstanding the gloomy sentiment, the potential for LED upgrades is huge.

‘If you consider the research commissioned by companies like AMA, they suggest that maybe a fifth of the market currently has moved to LED so that leaves a massive opportunity. It’s not hard to go out and find building stock that’s kitted out with legacy products where LED offers a compelling argument for an efficient replacement today.

‘And even going another stage, if I think of the [generation] one products that we were making five years ago, some of our own long-standing customers who have been loyal to Tamlite for many years and they’re coming back to us to take today’s latest technology which itself offers an improvement to what we were selling back in 2013.’

He said the company was now facing the next challenge, which was to present a solid and comprehensive offer in the world of smart and connected lighting.

An example is the firm’s e-connect system for monitoring emergency lighting. The first 50 pages of the company’s new catalogue is dedicated to the company’s Vision lighting controls range and every luminaire in the publication is now Dali-enabled.

Allden was speaking at the LuxLive exhibition in London where Tamlite has been exhibiting since

2013. He described the annual London exhibition as ‘an excellent platform to engage with the firm’s customers, to show the industry what we’re about and to expose the brand to the wider market’.

Tamlite, whose sister company is the leading UK wholesaler City Electrical Factors, employs 350 staff at its 1/4 million square feet of manufacturing plant in the West Midlands.

The company was named ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ at the 2018 Lux Awards for demonstrating ‘exceptional performance and innovation’ during the period.

The judges recognised Tamlite’s ‘impressive achievements over the year’ which included a 28 per cent increase in sales – taking turnover to £59 million,  a 30 per cent increase in sales staff and a £1 million investment in surface mount technology since 2016 at its Tamtec Electronics division; and major product launches including xcite and Revo ranges.
