A REVOLUTIONARY downlight which enables internet access through light rather than radio waves has been unveiled by French manufacturer Lucibel.
The luminaire, which has a Cat 6 cable port and a built-in Li-Fi transceiver – can offer internet speeds of up to 54 Mbps to devices using the linked dongle. This ‘generation two’ light fitting – part of a range of units – builds on the very first Li-Fi luminaires which were launched at the LuxLive exhibition in London in 2017.
PureLiFi, the pioneering technology company using light to create next-generation wireless networks, has provided its Li-Fi technology for the range, which includes LED panels and other commercial form factors.
This new generation offers a boost in internet speed of 54 Mbps compared with 42 Mbps for the first generation. Other improved features include an increase in the number of users simultaneously able to benefit from a secure connection.
The product design allows a better integration of the lighting and connectivity functionalities. Additionally, Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, which eliminates the need for an electrical cable, is now integrated natively in the Li-Fi luminaires, so the fittings can receive both power and data on the same Cat cable.
‘We congratulate Lucibel on the launch of this second generation of products,’ Alistair Banham, CEO of pureLiFi, told Lux. ‘And we’re delighted to have once again provided our Li-Fi technology. We’ve achieved a more efficient, 30 per cent faster LiFi module with easy integration into Lucibel’s fantastic design. The result is a product that is more viable than ever as a solution to provide internet access through light.’
Frédéric Granotier, founder and CEO of Lucibel, said: ‘With the launch of this second generation, Lucibel continues to pioneer LiFi lighting products and stays ahead of its competitors. With the significant advancements of this new solution, and a base of more than 100 customers who have validated the first generation, we are confident of rolling out this new product more widely.
‘We are pleased to be working again with pureLiFi and look forward to the continuing success of the relationship.’
