NHS TRUSTS are scrambling to meet this month’s application deadline for £46 million of special funding for LED lighting.
The money – a potentially huge boost to lighting suppliers – is designed to cut energy use and improve the lit environment in hospitals, health centres, doctors’ surgeries and other NHS buildings.
Part of the NHS Energy Efficiency Fund, it’s being distributed by the specialist division tasked with upgrading the nation’s healthcare estate, NHS Improvement. The deadline is 30 November.
‘The clock is ticking,’ warned Kevin Cox, boss of energy-efficiency specialist Energys Group. ‘There are less than two weeks to go so we are urging estate managers across the NHS to move swiftly to take advantage of it this funding stream.
‘This £46 million fund will help NHS Trusts to reduce carbon and energy bills as well as deliver a cut to maintenance costs. This frees up much-needed funds which can be put directly back into front line services.’
Cox believes LED lighting will provide better quality lighting for both patients and staff, as well as reducing maintenance and energy costs, and cutting carbon.
An option for trusts is to take advantage of an existing LED Lighting Framework Agreement which gives them access to pre-qualified organisations, thereby ensuring both an efficient and cost-effective delivery.
Energys Group has recently been approved by the Essentia Framework (for NHS LED lighting) and is also an approved supplier under the Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation (YPO) Framework. Both frameworks provide a free service to NHS Trusts to support the entire process from bidding for grant cash, through tendering the work and delivery of the solution.
Applications for NEEF should be submitted through the NHS Improvement Estates and Facilities Collaboration Hub.
The deadline for applications is 12pm on 30th November.
‘The NHS currently spends more than £540 million on energy every year,’ Alexandra Hammond, sustainability director at Essentia and environmental sustainability manager at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. ’But it could be making significant savings by installing technologies such as LED lighting and smart energy management systems.
In September, the seven suppliers for a new LED lighting framework for NHS Trusts were named. Thorlux Lighting, Gamma, E.ON, Ecolite, Energy Saving Lighting, Blackbourne and the Energys Group were named as suppliers to the Essentia LED Lighting Framework, a structure linked to Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.
- Healthcare lighting will be the focus of a special conference stream at LuxLive 2019, which takes place on Wednesday 13 November and Thursday 14 November 2019 at ExCeL London. More info HERE.
