Can I use any manufacturer's products on a lighting track?

This question was answered by Eric Riley, sales and marketing director of illuma Lighting.

In an ideal world the answer would be yes, but as we don’t live in an ideal world the answer is a little bit more complicated.

Single circuit track and spotlights

Whilst a performance and safety standards exists for lighting tracks (BS EN 60570:2003), there are no agreements or standards controlling the design requirements of single circuit track and the adaptors that go on it, therefore a number of different designs exist. Always check with the spotlight and track manufacturers for compatibility and ideally check a sample spotlight and adaptor on the track as a test.

Three circuit track and spotlights

When the three circuit track system was first introduced the principal behind it was that all three circuit spotlights would fit all three circuit tracks, however, over time different three circuit track designs have appeared and now not all are compatible.  The need to send control signals to fittings for dimming purposes has further muddied the waters. So again, it is advisable to check with the manufacturers of the spotlights about the compatibility of their adaptors and the proposed or installed track.  Again, ideally check a sample spotlight and adaptor on the track to see if it works.

More than three circuit track and spotlights

There are no agreements or standards controlling the design requirements of multiple circuit track and the adaptors that go on it, therefore always check with the spotlight and track manufacturers for compatibility.
