Video: Superyacht maker unveils dynamic lighting

A dramatic exterior lighting design – created by UK-based Temeloy Advanced Lighting Design – has been unveiled for a new 90m superyacht by Oceanco.

Unveiled at the Dubai Boat Show, the extraordinary yacht Moonstone is the brainchild of Amsterdam-based boat specialist Van Geest Design. The unique lighting system has been designed by Temeloy Advanced Lighting Design.

The design includes that attachment of a series of faceted illuminated LED panels on the sides of the hull design. Each of the 600 independent backlit triangles on the hull can be individually dimmed by a lighting control system which can be accessed through a smart phone or iPad or the boat’s on-board entertainment system. A series of fluid, organic movements are pre-programmed. The lights are powered by 70 square metres of solar panelling on the yacht’s superstructure.

“The inspiration for the design came from nature and the experience you have when you look at the sea, and its continuous movement and play with the sky and sun light’ principal designer Pieter Van Geest told Superyacht Design magazine. ‘We wanted the yacht to be a part of, and to interact with its surroundings, as yachts and ships rarely look like they belong in their environment. They break the horizon and sometimes even spoil the landscape, and so our goal was to design something that can belong in and enhance its surroundings’.

‘To transform a yacht with light is not just about the quality of the light or the choice of the fitting, it is also the delicate, nuanced dance between tone, shadow and brilliance,’ said Temeloy Advanced Lighting Design principal Tiphaine Treins. ‘Though this difficult-to-achieve equilibrium it is possible to shape the emotional, even spiritual flow of this yacht.’

Moonstone – which is still at concept stage and is yet to find a buyer – features a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and a 15m beam. Accommodation includes a master suite located on the private owner's deck with a spa and gym area, a cinema and a touch-and-go helicopter pad. There’s also four double guest suites and two twin suites.
