Mall of Emirates in lighting Evolution

Lighting is at the heart of Evolution 2015, a AED$1 billion redevelopment of Dubai’s Mall of Emirates. Lighting designer Francis Krahe & Associates is responsible for the illumination.

The multi-stage redevelopment project features a series of new storefronts, shopping, dining and leisure opportunities, including the largest cinema ever built in the UAE. With 25,000 sqm of new retail space, Mall of the Emirates is enhancing its world-class shopping experience with new lighting, architecture and interior design.

When Evolution 2015 opened in September 2015 the new expansion featured more than 7,500 metres of LED linear lighting from EcoSense Lighting. Luminaires used included the EcoSense EcoSpec LED Linear Interior (LCIS) and EcoSense EcoSpec High Power LED Linear Interior (HPIS). A 3000K colour temperature was chosen for maximum visual effect. The LCIS was installed in the architectural coves directly outside most of the shop fronts while the HPIS was used to provide an upwards wash to the large arches running down the length of the upper mall floors.

“EcoSense was chosen for their great colour quality and consistency thanks to MacAdam 2 LEDs, high efficiency and long run lengths from a single leader (power) cable – ideal for the lengthy architectural coves,” says Andrew Bunker, regional director Middle East, EcoSense Lighting. “The integral brackets to the LCIS fixtures allowed on-site adjustment to correct the lighting performance throughout.”

The Mall of the Emirates in Dubai is a multi-level shopping mall featuring over 630 retail outlets, 100 restaurants and cafes, 80 luxury stores and 250 flagship stores. The complex also houses two family leisure centres— Ski Dubai (the Middle East’s first indoor ski resort and snow park) and the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre and Magic Planet, one of the largest indoor family entertainment centres in Dubai. When it originally opened in 2005, it was named the World's Leading New Shopping Mall at the World Travel Awards.

Lighting design for future phases will be designed and supported by LightTouch Dubai.
