World Handball Championship to play out in LED-lit stadiums

When the men’s World Handball Championship begins next week, the competing teams will be able to settle who’s best in a stadium lit with the latest and most efficient LED lights.

The Qatar Handball Association Complex in Doha, which was built for the championship, has had its façade and outdoor areas equipped with LED floodlights, wallwashers, strip lights and tape.

The fittings, provided by Spanish manufacturer Grupo MCI, are controlled with a DMX system over a fibre-optic network with presence control. Different lighting scenes can activated either though presence detection, time sensors or individual control, and the system can be operated with smartphones as well as regular remote controls.

Two-hundred-and-eighty-four LED wallwashers light up the entire façade, while 80 swivel-headed LED floodlights emphasise the top of the façade.

The contours of the outdoor stairs and handrails are highlighted with LED strip lights, and LED tape has been integrated into the hexagonal architecture surrounding the stadium.
