The new lighting is expected to be in place for the first home game of the 2014/15 season, which looks set to be a prestige fixture against Manchester United in August.
The project is part of a two-year deal under which Thorn Lighting becomes an official ‘partner’ of Sunderland AFC. The relationship is described by the club as a ‘mutually beneficial business partnership’.
Thorn Lighting, part of Austria’s Zumtobel Group, is a specialist in sports and stadia lighting. The company will equip the stadium with high performance discharge lighting suited to the needs of high definition television broadcasting.
Noel Whiffin, key account manager at Thorn Lighting, said: ‘The new system we are installing at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light uses our Altis Electronic product. Meticulously designed with modern technology in mind, this is suitable for HD television recordings and looks to eliminate visible flicker alongside providing excellent lighting levels.’
Commenting on the partnership, Sunderland AFC’s commercial director, Gary Hutchinson, said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Thorn Lighting to the Sunderland family. The new system being installed at the Stadium of Light will improve the experience for both our players and supporters.’
He added: ‘It has been a very positive period for us in terms of growing and developing our range of partnerships, and our agreement with Thorn Lighting is another step forward for the club.’
Whiffin commented: ‘As a company with manufacturing facilities in the north east, we are very pleased to strengthen our relationships in the local area, and a partnership with Sunderland AFC was a great opportunity to do this.’
