Mobile broadband – coming soon to a streetlight near you

Philips and Ericsson are working together to bring mobile broadband connectivity into streetlight columns.

The technology enables telecom operators to improve mobile network performance, and reduces the number of mobile telephone masts on a city’s skyline.

Mobile operators working with Ericsson will be able to rent space in the lighting columns.

Frans van Houten, president and CEO of Philips, said the technology offers cities a more energy efficient and safer urban area. He said: ‘This new connected LED streetlighting model is another example of us bringing the Internet of Things to life, and demonstrates the capabilities of light beyond illumination.’
