Philips lighting sales flat despite big LED growth

Sales of LED products were up 38 per cent for Philips in the first quarter of 2013 – but it wasn’t enough to make up for the sluggish construction market, which left overall lighting sales flat at €1.98 billion.

The lack of growth in the lighting division was roughly in line with the Philips Group as a whole, whose overall revenue remained flat at €5.3 billion.

Growth in Philips’ Lumileds and automotive lighting businesses was offset by declines in other areas, the company said. The overall headcount fell by 171 in the three-month period, partly due to what the company called an “industrial footprint reduction” in lighting.

LED-based products now represent nearly a quarter of Philips’ lighting sales.
