Home Depot recalls 64,000 luminaires over burn fears

The US  Consumer Product Safety Commission says that the shades of the Chinese-made vanity fixtures can ‘detach and fall, posing laceration and burn hazards’.

US homewares giant Home Depot is recalling 64,000 light fittings over fears they can cut and burn customers.

The US  Consumer Product Safety Commission says that the shades of the Chinese-made vanity fixtures can ‘detach and fall, posing laceration and burn hazards’.

This recall involves Home Decorators Collection three-light and four-light Comotti models. The light fixture styles have three or four chrome-colored glass shades with clear acrylic ball strands that surround a halogen light. The wall plate is made of reflective stainless steel.

The CPSC says consumers should immediately contact the manufacturer, Design Solutions International, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to receive free replacement light shades and replacement instructions.

The firm has received 108 reports of shades falling, including one report of a laceration to the head that also involved a laceration and burn to the arm and one report of a laceration to the leg. The light fittings were sold exclusively by Home Depot stores across the US and on its website from December 2014 through March 2017 for between $95 and $110.

"Oh, so now it's "Chinese-made", right? And to also see that this emphasis was made almost four times in that article? " Yeah let's blame the manufacturer and mention it many times to distract the fact that the Florida based company failed to research this fixture a little better. Were these things even UL or ETL certified?

This hypocrisy stinks. I think people should learn to take responsibilities for their failings rather than passing the buck. Simply check the reasons for the problems and have such addressed.

Does anyone know the "mechanics" of the failure? Adhesives, thermal fracturing, melting ? Anyone in the US have an instruction sheet on this fixture so we gain insights into the failure? "Acrylic ball strands that surround a halogen light" sure sounds risky. For LEDs this might pass muster, but halogen? I think not.
