BMW pioneers IoT lighting at Munich showroom

Premier car manufacturer BMW is pioneering Internet-connected lighting at its flagship showroom in Munich.

The intelligent lighting installation is designed to give customers an immersive, personalised experience in testing, selecting and purchasing a new model.

The lighting can enhance a car’s functionality and features when it is approached by a customer as well as deliver immediate tailored information as they’re walking through the door. The futuristic installation is the result of a collaboration with UK company Aurora Lighting which uses technology from Internet-of-Things lighting specialist Gooee.

‘The BMW customer experience is very different to that elsewhere. Smart lighting has the potential to create significant competitive advantages,’ said Aurora Projects managing director Gary Bennett.

Dubbed Aurora’s AXiO platform, the connected lighting technology debuted at EuroShop in Dusseldorf in March. It will be showcased in the UK at LuxLive 2017 in London in November.

AXiO’s IoT-enabling technology can enhances business intelligence and revenues by providing data on energy efficiency, human engagement and space optimisation.  Neil Salt, managing director of IoT at Aurora told Lux: ‘This is an exciting opportunity for Aurora’s IoT division and hardware engineering teams to work in partnership with BMW and be selected for this innovative retail lighting project.

‘They have some amazing concepts and it ratifies the development of Aurora’s smart platform and the fantastic connected experiences that can be delivered by the Gooee ecosystem.

‘With two highly technical and engineering businesses working in harmony, we really can demonstrate value beyond illumination.’
