LuxLive to profile first Li-fi office

The first office in the world where the internet is provided by the lighting will be profiled at next week’s LuxLive event in London.

The instillation is being set-up by Lucibel, in cooperation with Scottish company pureLiFi, at the headquarters in Paris of Sogeprom, the property arm of French bank Societe Generale.

Samsung acquires Martin parent in $8 billion IoT deal

Samsung has acquired car audio and electronics maker Harman, which is parent to Martin, a provider of lighting solutions for theatre and architectural applications.

The eight billion dollar deal is a sign that the technology giant sees the Internet of Things as a major part of its future business strategy.

IoT is widely seen as being a knight in shining armor for a lighting industry facing falling margins as saturation prompts LEDs to tumble in value. As a result of this LuxLive will devote an entire arena of talks and discussion to the subject at next weeks show in London.

Could LED insect discovery help to beat Zika and malaria?

A study completed by academics at Bristol University has found that LEDs attract significantly less insects than other light sources. The discovery could be beneficial to nations in South America and Africa, which are fighting mosquito-borne diseases.

The researchers considered a number of different light sources ranging from a tungsten filament lamp to fluorescent light sources and white LEDs and concluded that the heat emitted by light sources has more of an effect on insect attraction than the colour of the light.
